How Much Does AI Training Cost for a UK Small Business? What You Should Actually Expect to Pay
Reviewed by Debbie Wallace, Founder of aiBizAssist
This is one of the questions I am asked most often, and it deserves a straight answer and not a "it depends" that leaves you none the wiser.
Here is what AI training actually costs for a UK small business in 2026, what you get at each price point, and just as importantly what to watch out for.
The honest price landscape
AI training for UK SMEs currently sits across three broad tiers.
Free and low-cost tools (£0–£50/month)
This is where most businesses start, and often where they stay too long without getting real results. YouTube tutorials, ChatGPT's built-in guidance, free prompt libraries. Useful for awareness. Not sufficient for consistent adoption across a team.
Group workshops and training sessions (£500–£3,000)
A well-run half-day or full-day workshop for your team, delivered by a practitioner who tailors the content to your business. This is the sweet spot for most UK SMEs. At this level you should expect hands-on time with the tools, prompts written around your actual work, a take-home prompt library, and a clear picture of what to use and when.
If a workshop at this price point is mostly slides and demos with no hands-on component, you are being overcharged for a talk.
Multi-session programmes and ongoing support (£3,000–£10,000)
For businesses that want AI embedded across the whole team and not just introduced. Should include an AI usage policy for your organisation, per-role prompt libraries, identified automation opportunities, and follow-up sessions to catch the questions that always arise in week two and three.
What to be cautious about
Day one adoption is not the hard part. The hard part is week three, when the initial enthusiasm fades and old habits reassert themselves. Any training that does not include follow-up is burning a significant portion of its value.
Also watch for generic content. If the examples and prompts in your training session could have been written for any business in any industry, they probably were. AI training that genuinely sticks is specific to your sector, your team's actual tasks, and your existing tools and workflows.
What my workshops cover and why the approach matters
I deliver hands-on AI training workshops for UK SME owners and their teams, covering the tools that will make the biggest difference to how you work day to day, starting with Large Language Models such as ChatGPT.
Most people use around 10% of what an LLM can actually do. A significant part of every workshop focuses on prompt engineering - the skill of knowing how to instruct an AI tool to get genuinely useful, accurate results. This is one of the most underrated business skills of 2026, and one that pays back immediately.
I also cover data protection - what your company's data is, why it matters, what you should never put into a public AI tool, and how to use these tools safely without putting your business or your clients at risk.
What makes the approach different is where I come from. My background is in operations, supply chain and procurement - not technology. That means when I train a procurement team, I understand what their actual pain points are. When I work with an operations manager, I know what a Monday morning report actually involves. The examples we build during training are not generic. They are yours.
Every workshop is delivered online (remote teams) or in person, and includes practical exercises your team works through during the session using their own real tasks.
What about government funding?
There are several UK funding routes worth exploring before you spend.
The UK Government's AI Opportunities Action Plan has committed significant investment to AI skills for businesses. Regional Growth Hubs often offer subsidised digital adoption advice and can point you towards local funding. If your AI training has an element of R&D or new process development, you may also be eligible for R&D tax relief - worth discussing with your accountant before you invest.
It is also worth knowing that AI training workshops can qualify as a business expense for tax purposes. Keep your receipts and check with your accountant.
The real cost of not training your team
The question I encourage every business owner to flip is this: what is the cost of not training?
If each member of your team is spending two hours a week on tasks that AI could handle or significantly accelerate, that is two hours per person per week of capacity you are not recovering. For a team of five, that is ten hours weekly - more than a full working day that is left on the table.
The payback period on a well-run AI training session is typically measured in weeks, not months.
Starting point
If you are not sure where to begin, the right first step is an AI Readiness Assessment which is a structured review of your processes, tools and team confidence that tells you exactly where training will deliver the most return.
