What the Free Assessment Covers
The assessment evaluates your business across five key dimensions of AI readiness.
Strategy and Vision
Do you have clear goals for AI in your business? Leadership buy-in and a defined direction are the foundation everything else builds on. Without them, AI tools rarely stick.
Team and Culture
Are your people ready to adopt new ways of working? The biggest cause of failed AI implementation is not the technology. It is the people side. This dimension assesses how change-ready your team really is.
Data and Systems
Can your current data and software support AI tools? AI is only as good as the information it works with. This section looks at how organised, accessible and digital your business data is.
Workflow Efficiency
Where are the repetitive tasks and bottlenecks in your business? The best AI wins come from automating predictable, high-frequency work. This dimension identifies where that opportunity sits.
Security and Governance
Do you have policies in place for how AI tools are used? With GDPR and client data at stake, UK businesses need clear oversight of what AI tools are being used and how. This dimension checks whether you have that in place.
The Four AI Readiness Levels
Every business scores one of four readiness levels. Here is what each one means.
AI Starter Score: 18 to 35
Most businesses start here. At Starter level, the foundations need some work before AI tools will deliver value. Jumping straight to tools without a clear strategy leads to failed adoption, wasted spend and team frustration. The priority at this stage is clarity: define the problem you want AI to solve before you choose a tool.
What to focus on: Start with strategy, not software. Map your key processes. Have an honest conversation with your team about what they find repetitive or time-consuming.
AI Explorer Score: 36 to 59
You have started the journey and have real foundations to build on. The Explorer challenge is consistency. Some parts of your business are ready; others are not. That gap creates friction and limits how far AI adoption spreads. The businesses that move fastest from Explorer to Adopter pick one high-impact use case, prove it works, then expand.
What to focus on: Choose one process to automate or improve with AI. Get a quick win. Use that success to build team confidence and leadership buy-in for the next step.
AI Adopter Score: 60 to 79
You are in the top third of UK SMEs for AI readiness. Most businesses your size have not reached this stage. The Adopter risk is reactive adoption: adding AI tools as they appear rather than building a coherent strategy. At this stage, the biggest gains come from joining up what you are already doing and making AI part of your business plan deliberately.
What to focus on: Audit what AI tools you are already using and how they connect. Identify the two or three areas with the highest business impact and invest there intentionally.
AI Leader Score: 80 to 90
Very few SMEs reach this level. You have the foundations, the culture and the oversight to use AI as a genuine competitive advantage. The focus now is on scale and differentiation: using AI to do things your competitors cannot, staying ahead of the governance curve and positioning your AI capability as part of your business value.
What to focus on: Think about AI as a strategic differentiator, not just an efficiency tool. Consider how to communicate your AI capability to clients and how to keep your team's skills current.

- Team and Culture: 20 points (4 questions)
- Data and Systems: 15 points (3 questions)
